Indoor Air Quality in Tallahassee, FL

Indoor air quality and humidity control for Tallahassee homes. Filtration, ventilation, and moisture management suited to North Florida's pollen and humidity.

Pre-launchSeminole Heating & Air plans to offer residential indoor air quality throughout the Tallahassee area following our public launch. We are not accepting service requests yet — the guidance below is here to be useful in the meantime.

Tallahassee gives homeowners two air quality challenges at once: a long, intense pollen season and humidity that persists for most of the year. Both are made worse by the fact that we spend those months with the house closed up and the air conditioner running.

Indoor air quality work is not about selling gadgets. It starts with identifying what is actually happening in your home — moisture, filtration, duct leakage, or ventilation — and addressing the cause.

Humidity is the first thing to look at

Most complaints described as 'stuffy,' 'musty,' or 'the house never feels comfortable' are humidity problems rather than temperature problems. Indoor relative humidity in the range of roughly 45 to 55 percent feels comfortable and discourages mold and dust mites; well above that and a 74-degree house feels clammy.

Common local causes include an oversized air conditioner that short cycles, duct leakage pulling humid attic air into the system, and equipment that cannot run long enough to dehumidify. Fixing the cause beats adding equipment to compensate for it.

Filtration that helps without choking the system

A higher-rated filter captures more particles, but it also restricts airflow. Dropping a very restrictive filter into a system with undersized returns can reduce airflow enough to hurt performance and freeze a coil.

The better approach is matching filtration to what the system can handle, and where more capacity is needed, using a media cabinet with greater surface area rather than simply raising the rating on a one-inch filter.

Options worth considering for your home

  • High-capacity media filter cabinets that improve filtration without a large airflow penalty.
  • Whole-home dehumidification for houses that stay damp despite properly working cooling equipment.
  • Sealing duct leakage, which in a hot attic pulls in humid, dusty air on every cycle.
  • UV or air purification equipment where there is a specific reason for it — not as a default add-on.
  • Ventilation and pressure balance review in tighter homes.

Pollen season in North Florida

Spring in Tallahassee coats everything in oak and pine pollen, and that load reaches the system through the return side and any duct leakage. It also blankets the outdoor coil.

Practical steps: change filters more frequently through spring, keep the outdoor unit rinsed clean, and address return-side leaks that are pulling unfiltered air from attics, garages, or crawl spaces.

Frequently asked questions

What humidity level should I keep my house at in Florida?
Roughly 45 to 55 percent relative humidity is a comfortable and healthy target for most homes. Consistently higher readings are worth investigating.
Will a better filter fix my allergies?
Better filtration can reduce airborne particles, but it is one part of the picture alongside duct sealing, humidity control, and household sources. We will not make health claims about equipment.
Do I need a whole-home dehumidifier?
Some homes genuinely benefit, particularly well-insulated houses where the cooling load is low but the moisture load is not. Before recommending one we look at whether existing equipment sizing, airflow, or duct leakage is the real cause.
